*It is the best I could come up with. I am open to suggestions for a better title.

Part two can be found here.

Bill had been gone for hours and Byron was still furious. The nerve of that bastard to show up here after he pulled that stunt last night. Byron slammed the glass down on the table and filled it back up again. Byron knew jocks had a reputation for being a little slow when it involved doing anything with a brain but this was ridiculous. Byron threw back the shot and made a small face as the liquor burned on it way down. Byron was angry but he was proud of himself. He had finally found his backbone.

The old Byron would have let Bill talk knowing the lies he would have spewed forth. And the old Byron would probably have believed him. But that Byron was dead. The new Byron was no longer a push over. He was not going to bend over backwards to make other people happy. That stopped now. Shutting out Bill had been a good start but he had to keep it up. Byron knew Bill to well. When Bill wanted something he was like a dog with a bone, he did not let go until he was done. But what did he want? Forgiveness for being a complete ass to him? Who knows and who cares? Whatever the hell Bill wanted from Byron the was no way he was going to get it. Byron just hoped to God that he felt that way when this buzz wore off and he had to face Bill tomorrow.

* * *

This is not how Bill expected to end the night. He knew there would be some yelling, maybe a punch or two, but they were supposed to work this out. Bill was not supposed to be alone drinking a beer at his place. He would not have minded the beer but the alone part was not supposed to happen. He was supposed to be with Byron. That is why he had gone over there in the first place. To talk with Byron, find out what was making him so upset, and to make that right. And maybe a few more kisses that would have been a great night. But no. Instead Bill was alone in front of his T.V. with a deer in one hand and a lot of unanswered questions in his head.

Like what the hell had made Byron so mad? One second they were kissing and everything was great and the next Byron was pissed off? Bill could understand if Ursula had made a big fuss over it or if she had teased him but she had not. She could have cared less so that did not make any sense. Was he upset because of the kiss? Because he enjoyed it? That had to be it. Byron had seen a side of himself that he either did not know existed or he never wanted to get out. And now he was pissed at Bill for making him feel this way. That had to be the right answer. It was the only one that made sense. Byron was probably just afraid so he was lashing at the easiest target.

Sure the world was not a very accepting place. Hell just look at Nelly and HJ. Everyone knows that they are an item but heaven forbid if they actually acknowledge it. But it was not like Byron to let other people’s ideas about life control him. Bill remembers when Hollis and him had to get in between Byron and Nelly when one of their discussions on racism had gotten a little to heated. And hell that had happened on more than one occasion. Why the sudden change of heart?

Was Byron afraid that everyone was going to turn their backs on him because his in love with another man? Hell was he really in love? Bill was not sure but he knew that he felt something for Byron and he was positive that Byron felt something for him. And Bill was not going to give up this easily. Byron would come around soon. Bill just needed to show him that there was nothing to be scared of. That whatever they had going on between them was going to last. They may have only known each other a little over a year but Byron was special to Bill. Byron made him feel good about himself. Bill was able to be himself when Bill was around. Bill was going to win him back but first he need some sleep. He threw the beer bottle in to the trash and made his way to his bed and hoped that tomorrow would hurry the hell up and get here.

* * *

It was unusual waking up with out a splitting headache after a night of drinking. It was not that Byron drank all the time just when he did drink it was to get drunk and that seemed to be happening more and more often lately. Byron was having a hard time dealing with reality. He had started dressing up like this as means of helping society. Trying to make a world a better place for everyone. But it seemed that there really was no point to it anymore. Even if he did help someone it seemed that there was ten others he was to late to help.

And it would sure help out the problem he was having with a certain masked crime fighter. If he quit the Minutemen the chances of Byron seeing Bill were greatly reduced. Sure it probably was the coward’s way of dealing with his problem but at least it was dealt with. But who would help all the people that society forgot about? All the people that society pretended do not exist.

Captain Metropolis is a racist. Hooded Justice who is practically a Nazi. The Comedian the psychopath. Silk Spectre the fame junkie. That was uncalled for. Sally did a lot of good and for the most part here heart seemed to be in the right place it was just that snake of a manager she had. That bastard was in it for nothing more than a easy dollar. Sally would be so much better off if she just dumped the bastard. Dollar Bill the puppet of First National. That was the anger for the past few days talking. That aside Byron knew that Bill was a really good guy who tired his hardest to make the world a better place just like Byron. But the fact that Bill was employed by that damn bank meant that he spent half his time in that building instead of protecting innocent people. And that just left Silhouette the enigma. Byron knew next to nothing about Ursula except that see was a lesbian. And even that was not one hundred percent certain on. It is not like he had walked in on her making out with Silk Spectre or anything like that. It was just certain things she said when you talked to her before she changed the focus of the conversation on to you. It still amazed Byron how easily Ursula could do that. You could as her a simple question like what she had for lunch and before you realize it you are telling her about you dog Spot and how he "ran away" while you were at summer camp. Byron had never forgiven his parent for that. But one person fighting for the underdog was not enough. Byron signed and finished strapping on his wings and pulled his hood over his face before heading to headquarters.

* * *

Bill winced slightly when he opened his eyes. He was always a lightweight when it came to drinking that is why he did not do it that often. But last night called for it. Having a few beers is the only thing to do when all your hope comes crashing down in a matter of seconds. But that did not mean Bill was giving up on Byron. At the very least he was getting his friend back. Bill wanted more than that but that was up to Byron. He would just have to wait for Byron to accept himself. Hopefully that would not take to long but Bill was willing to wait for it because he knew that Byron was worth it.

But that did not mean he was going to be around Byron for a while. Bill was not sure if he would be able to leave Byron alone right now and the last thing he wanted was for Byron to yell at him like he did last night again. Bill had never been one to care what others think about. It just seemed to be a waste of time. But with Byron it was different. What Byron had said last night had really hurt and Bill was not sure he could take it right now. He also did not want to make a scene at work and he knew that Byron or him asking to work with someone different would do just that. What was going on between them was just that. It was between them and the rest of the Minutemen did not need to know. Bill picked up the phone and placed a quick call.

"Minutemen headquarters Night Owl speaking. How can I help you?"

"Hey Hollis it's Bill."

"Hey Bill. What's up?"

"I am not going to able to make it in for the next couple of mornings. First National is making me take a few extra sifts to pay for the repairs on my costume."

"What? You have to pay them to fix that stupid cape?"

"Yes. I know how you feel about capes and I agree with you but I have to have it. It is part of the costume. And that contact I signed says that I have to wear that costume."

"Fine. Just be careful. Ok?"

"Yes dad."

"Shut up Bill. You know that capes worries me. I'll see you in a couple of days."

"Ok Hollis see you then." Bill hung up the phone and finished putting his costume on before heading off to work.

* * *

Byron had just unlocked his office when he heard someone calling his name. He turned around to see Hollis heading towards him. "Hey Hollis. What's going on?"

"Bad news. Bill called in. The bank is making him pull some extra shifts to pay for the repairs on his cape. So he is not going to be here for the next couple of days. Looks like you are going to be on you own for a bit. Unless you can get Ursula or Eddie to let you tag along with them until Bill gets back."

"Hey thanks. I guess we will see what is going to happen when Ursula gets in."

"So I take it you are not going to even try Eddie. I do not blame you. He is a little too intense for my taste too. Good luck."

"Thanks Hollis." Byron walked in to his office and wrote a note to Ursula asking to talk to her when she got in. Byron taped the note to her door and went back to his office and picked up a book to read. A few hours later a knocking at his door pulled him out of the Emily Dickinson poem he had been reading. "Hey Ursula. You mind if I tag along with you today? You know how I hate working alone."

"Yeah sure but what happened to Bill? He still sore from last night?"

"Now did you know about last night?"

"Bill told me about it. When you did not show up yesterday he got a little worried. And before he pulled his evening shift at the bank he asked me to keep an eye out for you. He said that he wanted to talk to you after work and to give him a call incase you showed up while he was working. So I take it you and lover boy worked out whatever was pissing you off and you two kissed and made up?"

"No that is not even close to what happened. I threw his ass out when he showed up at my place."

"What? Why did you do that?"

"Because I am tired of being the butt of his stupid joke."

"What joke? What the hell are you talking about?"

"Remember when you walked in and Bill said that it was just a joke. That is what I am talking about. Some how he figured out that I liked him and he thought it would be funny to get my hopes up and then crush them. You walking in stopped him from doing that but it let me figure out what he was up to and I am not going to let him do that to me. I am done being used."

"Oh honey. I think you misunderstood Bill. He was not joking when he kissed you. He only said that because he was freaked out because I walked in on the two of you. He was a little embarrassed but he feels something for you. So stop being a dumb ass and just kiss and make up. And besides you two are perfect for each other. Have I ever been wrong before?"

"No but still."

"No buts honey just do it."

"We'll see but first we have got a job to so lets go." Byron put his bookmark back in place and followed Ursula out his office. Byron locked his door and nearly walked in to Ursula who was looking paler than usual and staring at the TV with her mouth open. "What's wrong?" Bill followed the finger that she raised and felt like puking after what he saw.

"We repeat. The Dollar Bill has been shot."

:( :( :( MY HEART

(I'm wondering: would you like a beta? Not to rag on your writing technique, but I do see a few mistakes here and there. I would be more than happy to beta for you, if you'd like.)

Sorry to upset you. If my muses take me the way I think they are going it might end happily. But then again they like to go dark sometimes.

(I would be very grateful if you would be willing to beta for me. I have always been horrible when it comes to proof reading. It takes me a few reads and I will still find mistakes.)

The ending was kind of vague didn't it. It seemed like a good place to end the chapter.

You hear that crack? That was my heart after reading that ending. :'(
But in happier thoughts-I love the small interaction between Bill and Hollis.

Can't wait to read more!
