The world lost a great man yesterday

My Opi passed away around 12:30 yesterday morning. He had been sick for a while. On Christmas day my Omi had to rush him to the hospital because he thought he was having another heart attack. Turns out it was not a heart attack but fluid had built up in his lung because he was suffering from congestive heart failure, one of the signs of congestive heart failure is fluids building up in your chest. He had several heart surgeries in his past. The last one he had about two years ago to replace a heart valve that was not working properly. Earlier this year he was diagnosed with Alzheimers. So my mom and her sisters decided it was time for them be moved down here. My grand parents retired to Minnesota. Two of their daughters live here in Georgia and the other one lives in Florida. When the finally got down here Opi continued to go down hill pretty fast. We had lunch with them Saturday and he looked really bad and by Thursday he was unresponsive and the Hospice nerses were giving him less then 24 hours to live. My dad called me at work around 4 (great way to spend the next five hours) and told me about it. So after I got off I went to visit him and say my last goodbyes. Then about an hour and half after I left he passed. As much as it hurts and saddeness me to know that he is no longer here and much as I know that I am going to miss him I know that he is in a much better place. Opi had a major impact in my life. He took me for my very first hair cut. Put together my very first bike. And he was the one that gave me the love of history that has stayed with me to this day.

Opi I love you and miss you.

Sorry. I'll keep you and your family in my thoughts. But I'm grateful that you have those great happy memories to hold onto in this hard time for you. Know that he will always be with you through those memories. It was hard for me to lose my grandfather as they always have a special place in our hearts but the memories we have of him has kept us strong and keeps a little part of him with us.
